The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, hosted a session titled “Science, Research, and Innovation for Future Transition” on October 6, 2024, during the STS Forum 2024 – The 21st Annual Meeting at the Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto, Japan.

Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, presided over the opening of the session. She highlighted that science, technology, and innovation play critical roles in transforming the world and daily life. Thailand has developed its National Science, Research, and Innovation Plan 2023–2027 to address future challenges, with a focus on engaging young researchers, who are pivotal in driving change and offering solutions to global issues.

Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, emphasized that science, technology, and innovation are key factors in shaping global systems, advancing knowledge, and accelerating solutions to global challenges. Empowering the younger generation is essential to adapting to a rapidly changing world. The ministry places high importance on expanding international cooperation in higher education, science, research, and innovation with leading organizations and global partners.

Dr. Wiparat Dee-ong, Director of NRCT, welcomed participants, noting that science, research, and innovation have entered an unprecedented era, marked by rapid advancements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and other scientific and technological breakthroughs. She stressed the importance of young researchers, who not only contribute to scientific discoveries but also embody the shared commitment to creating a better future for the world.

Prof. Hiroshi Komiyama, Chairman of the STS Forum, congratulated NRCT and Thailand for organizing this session, particularly for supporting the role of Young Leaders in shaping the future of the world.

NRCT also hosted a panel discussion on “Driving Innovation and Shaping a More Resilient, Secure, and Sustainable Future by STS Forum Young Leader,” moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anurak Khantachavana and Ms. Sirinporn Deotrakul, experts in research systems from NRCT, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dusit Athinuwat serving as the host. The panel included Young Leaders from Thailand as panelists:

  1. Engineering – Dr. Ornluck Phichitkul, Suranaree University of Technology
  2. Virology and Cell Technology – Dr. Papon Muangsanit, National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC)
  3. Environmental Management – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Methinee Yujoren, Prince of Songkla University
  4. Computer Engineering – Dr. Janejira Jaimung, Chiang Mai University
  5. Environmental Technology – Dr. Pavita Boonrath, Prince of Songkla University (Phuket Campus)

The key conclusion from the discussion was that Thailand is entering an exciting era of innovation and research. Various research projects aim to address national and global challenges, ranging from environmental conservation to medical technology development. In environmental research, IoT networks are being developed to monitor mangrove environments and study coastal ecosystems. In computer engineering, tools for assessing privacy law compliance for SMEs are being developed. Urban Air Mobility concepts are being explored in transportation, and in medical research, innovations in biomaterials and tissue engineering are underway. These initiatives demonstrate Thailand’s commitment to using science and technology to improve quality of life and make a regional and global impact.

NRCT remains dedicated to promoting and supporting young researchers in entering both national and international platforms, helping establish global partnerships in academic and research fields.
